SuperGrans Readaloud
Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature was thrilled to offer a programme for kindergartens, the City of Literature SuperGrans Readaloud, on 24-28 May 2021. Two wonderful Dunedin writers, Kathryn van Beek of Bruce Finds a Home and Bruce Goes Outside fame and Emma Wood, author of Tulip and Doug visited six kindergartens in the South Dunedin region, where they read and discussed their stories, and took part in crafting activities, with the enthusiastic young story lovers. Superbly supported by volunteer SuperGrans, this readathon captured the attention and imagination of the children while forging a special and exciting partnership. Timed to coincide with the National Library’s Read Share Grow initiative, this programme was a hit with the authors, SuperGrans volunteers, pupils and kindergarten staff alike.
The focus of the programme was sharing story and the joy and connectivity children experience when they are read to, either one-on-one or in a group. Following on from the successful City of Literature Primary Possibilities, which saw award-winning poet Liz Breslin visiting South Dunedin primary schools, City of Literature SuperGrans Readaloud is the second of three projects developed for South Dunedin children aged between 4 and 7 for 2021. The third project involves the City of Literature South Dunedin Poet Lorikeet, so watch this space!
