Praise the Lord playwright residency

Samesame But Different are supporting Auckland Pride to present the 2nd year of the Praise the Lord playwright residency, created in memory of pioneering gay playwright Robert Lord.

We are asking queer playwrights to submit their new plays, incomplete or complete, for development opportunities across 2025. This will kick off with our annual play-reading event as part of the Samesame But Different festival during February.

Entry Guidelines

• We encourage Takatāpui and Rainbow playwrights of all levels to apply.

• If you don’t have a completed draft, a strong excerpt that demonstrates potential is just as acceptable.

• While there is no specification that the subject matter be queer, we hope to encourage writers to write boldly and bravely into their definitions of queerness.

• We are not evaluating based on the notion of a best script, so much as a script that displays strong potential and will benefit the most from the development.

• Our preference is for playwrights based in Tāmaki Makaurau as readings and workshops will be based here.
