Moa Imaginarium Competition

Posted: Friday Jan 03, 2020

Upload a picture, poem, or short-story inspired by the moa footprints on display at Otago Museum and be in to win!

Earlier this year, something amazing was found in the Kyeburn River. A row of strange markings under the water turned out to be moa footprints!

The prints were brought to Otago Museum to save them from being worn away. You can see them undergoing conservation work in our People of the Word gallery right now.

They are big, old, and very mysterious!

Once the prints have finished drying out, they will be investigated by all sorts of people to find out what made them, when they were made, and how they have been preserved for so long.

We are so excited and we can’t wait for the results, so we want to know what you think.

What was the moa doing, thinking, feeling, where was it going, and why?
How do you imagine the prints were made, found, and recovered?
What might the scientists find out about life in Otago when the prints were made?

Let your imagination run wild and capture your ideas in a picture, poem, or short story, and then upload your entry to our website.

The Moa Imaginarium Competition is open to all children aged 5–12 who live in the Otago region.

Competition entries will be displayed at the Museum and on our website, and the best entries will win some moa-sized Museum prize packs.
