Information for applicants for Opera Otago Audience Development Officer

THE PROJECT

Phase 1 of the project is the analysis of existing information, and the gathering of further information, about Opera Otago's audience members. To an audience survey completed in 2015 we completed a survey of the audience attending our production of The Pirates of Penzance in October 2017, and we will invite via our website and Facebook page an invitation to others to fill out the same survey online. Through the survey we intend to find out more about our audience members and about their interest in being more closely involved with us.

The surveys and their analysis will tell us more about our audience and potential audience, which will help us plan more effective marketing of our productions.

Phase 2 moves from analysis to action. We intend to form, from those interested, an ongoing core group of supporters which might be titled Friends of Opera Otago. Such a group would provide a modest but valuable source of income for us, a means to connect performer and audiences more closely, and a base upon which we can build wider audiences and support. This phase will include holding conversations with Friends groups of other local arts organizations, the development of an appropriate model for Opera Otago, and the setting up of the group.

Long-term, the project should lead to a higher profile for opera and Opera Otago in the community, more effective marketing and earlier ticket bookings (via our own website booking system), and an enthusiastic core of strong supporters for our work. All of these will help ensure our stability as an arts provider in Dunedin and the region.
