Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature was proud to partner with Otago Polytechnic’s Dunedin School of Art for the launch of Neil Grant: Master Potter by Peter Stupples, held on 20 October 2021.
‘‘Pottery is my challenge, striving toward the unreachable — creating something which I cannot define, probably will not attain, yet which compels me to turn and assemble and glaze and fire ...’’
So begins Neil Grant’s story and these words give a hint of the passion and renowned commitment he brought to his work over a long and distinguished career. Neil is a well-respected tutor who over many years has provided encouragement, guidance and professionalism to vast numbers of graduates from Dunedin School of Art’s popular, world-class ceramics degree. Unsurprisingly the event was attended by many guests from the ceramics world, work colleagues and friends. The beautiful book conceived and curated by Pam McKinlay was released to coincide with a survey exhibition of Neil’s work, and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Ceramics Association of New Zealand of which he is a founding father.
Over coffee and cake, guests were treated to rare insights from Neil himself on techniques that culminated in the production of some of the outstanding pieces on display. Author Peter Stupples was eloquent in his descriptions and gently guided the discussion, inviting members of the audience to share their fascinating insights and memories. There was a palpable feeling in the room of aroha for Neil and the evening was a wonderful celebration of his mana and work.
