Read what the library means to Jessica Hinerangi Thompson-Carr - Māori Mermaid
What is your earliest library memory?
My earliest library memory is sitting on the steps in the kids section of Dunedin public library reading Shirley Barber fairy books with my mum.
What does a library mean to you?
The library means so much to me, it was where I went almost every day after school. I would sit for hours at the window with piles of books I wouldn’t even have time to finish, but I loved to keep them near me. I found safety and comfort there, when I was a pretty insecure, nervous kid, the library made me feel at home. I met all the classics there, Zora Neale Hurston, Virginia Woolf, Patricia Grace, Janet Frame, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, and I felt consumed and inspired.
What is a favourite book of yours?
One of my favourite books is The Parihaka Woman by Witi Ihimaera, and when I was a kid my most checked out favourite book was Faeries by Brian Froud and Alan Lee.
