New festival celebrates women’s art and music

The Dunedin Festival of Women’s Art and Music (DfestWAM) will be launched this weekend, as part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival.

The 12-hour festival, which celebrates women’s creativity with workshops, music and visual art, will run from noon to midnight this Saturday, March 20, at Arc Brewing Co in Blueskin Bay.

DfestWAM artistic director and local musician Deirdre Newall said the event aimed to celebrate the artistic voices of women of diverse ages, backgrounds and stages of career.

The programme includes art installations by five visual artists, ten musical acts and two workshops.

Festival organiser Fiona Stuart said the inaugural festival had been fortunate to attract Dunedin City Council funding.

It was hoped it would become an annual festival.

A bus is available to transport festival-goers to the Arc Brewery and back to Dunedin. Tickets are available at www.dunedinfringe.nz.
