Printer in Residence project, Otago, 2019
Posted: Tuesday Jul 30, 2019
Over a period of some 20+ years, Charles Brasch wrote a number of ‘concerned citizen’ letters to the Editor of the Otago Daily Times. The topics he wrote about ranged from the ‘Art Gallery Site’, and ‘University Architecture’ to ‘Logan Park Poplars’ and ‘Vietnam’.
The project for this year’s University of Otago Library’s Printer in Residence programme is to print a selection of letters; they date from October 1950 to March 1972. One hundred copies will be hand-printed by Dr John Holmes at the Otakou Press Room. The text will be illustrated with images by Marion Wassenaar, artist and lecturer in the Print Studio at Otago Polytechnic’s Dunedin School of Art. The letters were ‘discovered’ by Dr Lynn Jenner, author of the recently published Peat, a work that creatively matches Brasch to the Kapiti highway. Jenner will provide an introduction.
In this year of the 150th celebrations of the University of Otago, it is fitting to focus on Brasch, who was a strong advocate of the University, and of course Dunedin.
Tentative title: Selected Letters by Charles Brasch to the Editor of the Otago Daily Times.
Retail cost: $90.00 (gst) & post
This book will make a superb Xmas present (nothing like good planning), or add to your stock of already fine books produced by Otakou Press. If you would like a copy, please let me know and I will place your name on the list.
