Read what the library means to Ian Chapman - Dr Glam
What is your earliest library memory?
Our family wasn’t very library-oriented in my youth, at least not as far as public libraries went. But the school library at Hamilton Boy’s High School in the early-mid 1970s was a sanctuary within a sea of testosterone and bullying: full of adventure and transformative possibility for the ‘arty’ less rugby-fixated kids who would flock there at morning interval and lunchtimes to escape, read and dream.
What does a library mean to you?
It’s still a place of full of adventure and transformative possibility. And it provides welcome breathing space within the city’s tumult whenever needed - you can feel your breathing and your heart slow down when you enter its welcoming confines.
What is a favourite book of yours?
Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. I’ve never gardened since.
