The Rush Cottage Writers' Residency

Hawke’s Bay Readers & Writers Trust, in conjunction with Black Barn Retreats, is excited to invite applications for the second ever Rush Cottage Writers’ Residency. The online application form opens 9am 10 March and is limited to 50 applicants.

Applications will open at 9.00am on Monday 10 March, and close at 5pm Sunday 16 March 2025.

The successful applicant will be notified by Friday 21 March 2025. 

Who can apply:

Applications are invited from writers who are currently legally resident in Aotearoa New Zealand, working on any of the following forms: short stories, the novel, poetry, creative non-fiction, memoir and graphic novels.

You will need to have one work already published/self-published that is currently publicly available to Aotearoa readers, and provide a link to this in your application.
You must sign a declaration that you are able to take up the Residency on the dates given below.

Dates: 

The residency covers 7 night’s accommodation for one person at Rush Cottage, from check in on Monday 19 May - check out on Monday 26 May, 2025. These timings are fixed and there will be no negotiation.

Entry numbers will be capped at the first 50 received. You will know immediately whether your application has been accepted.
