Contributions sought for centenary limited-edition hand-printed publication
Posted: Monday Mar 28, 2022
In celebration and recognition of Hone Tuwhare’s birth on 21 October 1922, a centenary limited-edition hand-printed publication is planned by the Centre for the Book for 2022. This publication will be associated with the Otakou Press and the Centre for the Book at the University of Otago, Ōtepoti Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature, and the Hone Tuwhare Trust.
Donald Kerr, Co-director, Centre for the Book is asking for contributions, but because of the nature of the process of hand-printing, contributors are asked to submit short pieces – poetry or prose – detailing their thoughts, memories and associations on Hone Tuwhare, one of New Zealand’s most important poets. It is hoped that there will be contributions from his family, friends, and those whom he influenced. Although there will be no doubt some flexibility on pieces received, the length of prose submissions of up to 300 words will be considered; haikus welcome.
The aim is to print some 14 to 20 contributions, but this could vary, dependent on what is received and the length of each. It is hoped that the selection offers a wide range of responses to Tuwhare, man and poet. A tentative title is ‘Hone Tuwhare: As We Knew Him’.
The publication will appear in a limited edition of 120 copies only and the Centre for the Book is aiming for October 2022. Twenty copies will not be for sale, these going to makers of the book, the contributors, and to libraries such as the Hocken and Legal Deposit, National Library. The remaining 100 copies will be for sale at $100.00 (incl GST) per copy, plus post/packing.
It will be hand-printed by Dr John Holmes, Frayed Frisket Press, Dunedin, using white Munchen Pure, 130 gsm paper. It will be bound by David Stedman, Duty-Bound, Dunedin. An artist will be asked to produce 2-3 images for the text.
The deadline for copy is
Friday 1 July 2022. If you are interested in contributing to this beautiful
celebratory volume, please register your interest with Donald Kerr on Donald.kerr@otago.ac.nz
