Call and No Response: The Impact of International Conflict on Refugee Communities in Scotland/UK

Thursday, 21st November 2024 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Toitu Otago Settlers Museum - Auditorium

Toitū presents a lecture from Alison Phipps, of the University of Glasgow, in collaboration with the University of Otago Centre for Global Migrations.

What happens when war breaks out and you can’t return home? How do you deal with the separation from family and friends? What does it mean to lose a home and to no longer have an address? How do you approach the funerals of loved ones you cannot attend? What to do with the helplessness?

This lecture focuses on several conflicts and responses but in particular examines fifteen years of Professor Alison Phipp’s work with the Gaza Strip and the differing responses and needs in a fraught and contested environment in Scottish and UK Higher Education and through wider actors, protests, demands, MPs and the media.
